I've been working at The Sounds of Time for what humans of the Milky Way would measure as being 342 Earth years. Cataloging and preserving endless living history is sometimes tedious, always complicated. In the long run though, I've welcomed it as a rewarding and satisfying endeavor in my own life, not to mention enlightening. I've seen and experienced things I never could in my world outside of The Sounds.
And as this morning reminded me, it never ceases to bring me surprises...
It was quiet and lonely during those early hours, and the rain I could hear applauding outside indicated that we were unlikely to receive many visitors from the general public. I had been absorbed in the massive undertaking of cataloging all of the information we had recently obtained regarding a certain galaxy revered bounty hunter who was raised by a race of large bird like creatures. As fascinating as her history was however, any mentally demanding activity eventually exhausts the last of your intellectual resources.
I was spent, and running on less than the usual amount of sleep I was acquainted to thanks to the new depression meds my body is still adjusting to. I retired to a seat behind the lobby desk. The hum of the nearby Windows 95 combined with the relentless downpour was all it took for me to surrender to an early slumber.
It became evident to me some time later that a persistent knocking from the lobby entrance was vying for my attention. I raised my weary head and glanced at the clock in the corner of the computer screen to confirm how much time had passed. I forced my feet down to the tile flooring below and began walking briskly to acknowledge our mystery guest.
As whoever on the other side of the door began to knock a fifth time, I flung the door open and greeted our visitor. He was a ginger haired gentleman, donning a trenchcoat. A white umbrella with an unusual symbol printed on it shielded him from the pouring onslaught above.
"Hello, can I help you?"
"Salutations" he responded. He grinned wide, revealing an ear to ear smile. I sensed no malevolence, yet something about this man was very off putting to me. His presence felt surreal.
"Sounds of Time?" he inquired.
"Oh, yes... You're at the right place... please come in if you'd like, we--"
"Not necessary" he stated abruptly, but also with a sense of politeness. "You catalog history, correct? I have something for you."
He then held a box in my direction. "Take it. This is for you." he insisted, grimace still strong.
I lifted the box from his hands and inspected it on closer view. Scrawled on top in permanent marker read the words "The Sounds of Time - CONTRIBUTIONS". I rotated it searching for additional clues regarding what was contained inside.
"Thank y--" I began, stopping as I looked up to see the man was gone. Through the pouring rain I could see that a very long limousine idled in our parking lot. The limousine was so long in fact, that I could not see the front of this vehicle.
The window at the end of the horizontal monstrosity rolled down and my eyes spotted once again the gentleman's toothy smile staring back at me. "You'll know what to do after you open it." he assured me with raised volume to match the roar of the rain. "Cheers!"
With that, the window rolled back up and the limousine accelerated forward. I watched as the rear of this lengthy automobile disappeared within the watery torrent ahead, the piercing glow of taillights fading from my gaze.
